Movement Map

Explore movement, rhythm and repetition in an additive 3D structure. Using foam core or paper, create an approximately A4 sized 3D work with at least 6 layers.

Design & Process

From the brief, I envisioned a topology map as an effective visual representation of movement. I chose to use a map of Hong Kong – Shen Zhen – Guangzhou with a thick black paper base for each layer. The subtractive abstract shapes follow a spiral shape made of large, medium and small shapes to show movement and balance.

The top layer with the largest shapes were cut with an exacto knife first, working downward. The intricate connecting lines were planned in pencil before carving. Each paper layer is separated with a foam core strip to add the depth and space between each layer.
